What is a Martingale Dog Collar?
Martingale collars, traditionally, do not have buckles. They have a slip section where the D ring is, which tightens when the dog pulls. Once the slip section pulls tight, it can no longer tighten. There are many reasons why you and your dog may benefit from a martingale style of dog collar. Here are a couple.
One reason why a martingale may be the right collar for your dog has to do with your dog’s proportions. Sighthounds and dogs who have a head measurement that is smaller than their neck measurement can easily escape from a buckled collar by backing out of it while on a leash. A martingale tightens to their neck when they pull on a leash, preventing an escape.

Martingales are agility collars
For dogs who participate in agility, flyball, or other sports, collar grabs are often used. Martingales are loose on the dog’s neck when your dog is off-leash. When you grab your dog’s collar to do a restrained send or to rev them up with excitement, you want to easily slide your hand under the collar. The martingale style of collar serves this purpose, making it the typical agility training collar of choice.

Adjustable dog collars
Measure your dog’s neck where the collar will sit. If your dog is close to the biggest measurement listed for a collar size, size up. Eg – a dog with a 13″ neck should get a medium sized collar. This is because martingales need to slide over your dog’s head in order to be put on and taken off. So, even though our martingales are adjustable, it is still important to measure your dog. Be sure to let us know if you need assistance getting an accurate neck measurement on your dog or seleting the right size.

Brie’s Pick! This is my favorite from the Christmas Collection. Teyla’s martingale is gorgeous for showing off when we’re out and about, but it also takes the battering of our outdoorsy lifestyle. She rolls in poo – a LOT. Each trip through the wash, it comes out looking as crisp and clean as it did the day I made it <3
Melena –
Trexie loves her new collar. It fits her perfectly. It’s looks amazing on her and it’s functional for her active lifestyle.
